Lullaby

This is KayeDawn's Lullaby quilt top. It is the project we are going to make in 2008 in order to learn different kinds of applique. If you are interested and didn't remember to sign up at the January meeting, leave a comment or email Rachel before the February 7th guild meeting to get the instructions and supplies list you need to be ready.

Memories Quilting Retreat

There she is, one of our favorite quilting ladies, Amy McClellan, (in the purple shirt) teaching us at one of our fall 2007 guild meetings.
Amy is the owner of American Quilting in Orem, one of the funnest quilting stores around. She offers so many cute projects at her store, and now there is news of a quilting retreat sponsored by Amy and American Quilting. The retreat is called 'Memories' and will be held February 28th, 29th, and March 1st at the Marriot Hotel in Provo. There will be demonstrations, lectures, prizes, and socials. You can take all your pizza boxes full of your projects to work on or you can take one of the classes offered down there. Call American Quilting at 801 802-7841 to get more information, or Barbara Murdock has a catalog if you would like to get in touch with her.

These 2 quilts are patterns made and distributed by Indygo Junction, a pattern line that American Quilting carries. The top one is called Time Began in a Garden and the bottom is called By Wisdom a House is Built.

Change in Location for February's Meeting

Hello ladies, just a heads up about our February guild meeting. They started construction in the basement of the AmBank, so we will be meeting at the County building. The county building that houses the health department and USU Extension, for all you locals, the old hospital.
The address is 55 South and 500 East, Heber City. We will be meeting in a conference room near the USU Extension Offices. The best place to park is on the north or east sides of the building, so right off of Center Street. Go in the north doors, they are at the top of a loading dock on the north side (Center Street side) of the building.
Go through the double glass doors and then take your first doorway on your left. There is a nice, big conference room waiting for us there. I think the number on the door is 132.

Just a little inspiration for you. This is KayeDawn's friendship block quilt for 2007. It is called Autumn Leaves. So pretty! Hopefully you are all dreaming about what you want your friends to help you make this year during our Friendship Block Exchange.

January Cool Tool

Sherron shared the cool tool of the month for January. She showed us a circle cutter that she made this quilt with. There are a few different kinds and brands out there for sale, so take your pick and make a fun quilt like this one of Sherron's. Most are made of the hard material that our rotary cutting rulers are made of, and they have semi circles cut into them so you can cut perfect circles.

HMQS 2008, Salt Lake City, UT

The Home Machine Quilting Show is coming up, May 7-10th. Do you have your catalog yet? Click on this link, www.hmqs.org and then click on mail me a free class catalog. Start deciding what classes you will be taking and get ready for a fun time. The vendor mall will be open May 8-10th with so many companies (150) represented, be sure to bring your wallet. Also, the world famous The Supper quilt will be on display. It is a quilted representation of Leonardo daVinci's The Last Supper painting. The HMQS also has a great quilt show for you to walk through, as well as a judged competition that will inspire you!

An Eastern Hello

Kari Giacalone, our guild president for a wonderful half of 2005, has sent a quilting hello to everyone here in the Heber Valley Quilt Guild. She moved to Pennsylvania during her presidential year. She did a great job teaching us all kinds of things like crooked piecing, the fun of folk art, machine applique, and many more exciting techniques for our Primitive Americana quilt theme in 2005. Thanks Kari!
Her family just recently moved to Tennessee where she hears there are some really great quilt shops nearby. Kari sent a nice big hello to all her quilting friends in Heber.

January Queen Bee

Our January Queen Bee is Beth Wegner. She was born in Oregon. She and her husband eventually moved to Utah County where she attended and then taught beauty school. They moved up to our valley and they have 4 children, mostly teenagers. She began quilting right after she said her first word, okay, kidding, but close. She remembers being very small and watching her grandmother at the quilting frames and helping. Her very first quilt was made in 1990 and look at some of her fun things now!

Finish a Project

KayeDawn is so excited about our new Finish a Project incentive and we should be too! The rules are that the quilt needs to be at least 36 inches by 36 inches, must have more left to complete than just the binding, and it must be quilted, bound, and labeled. Members will get a chance at the prize for each quilting project that is finished and brought to guild meeting and shown to all of us. New projects are also eligible for this incentive. The lucky drawing will be held at our December social. Get all those pizza boxes full of quilt blocks out and get busy!

Design Challenge 2008

Heber Valley Quilters 2008 Design Challenge!
Our theme for 2008 is Elements - water, air, fire, earth
January is Elements of Quilting - the block and the border
If you are participating in the design challenge this year, and hopefully you are, for the month of January you need to be working on a quilt block that measures between 14 and 19 inches square. Find a pattern or make your own and then pick your fabrics, both with your element that you drew in mind. There are many places online that have free block patterns. Make your block. Then you need to put a border on your new block that is at least 3 inches wide but not bigger than 5 inches wide.

Thank You Brenda!

I finally got a picture of Brenda last night at our guild meeting to post. She has been our guild president for 1 1/2 years. She took over the presidential duties in July 2006 when our president, Michelle, moved away. So Brenda finished off the year for us and then served as president for 2007. A big thank you to Brenda for her service this past year and a half! You did a super job with our guild. THANK YOU BRENDA!

News About Quilting in the Woods and Charity Quilts

Well, once again we have been inspired at our quilt guild meeting! Our January 2008 Kick Off was full of information, fun, and motivation! There is way too much to handle in one post, so you will get a little bit every few days.

First of all, here is a kaleidoscope quilt made by Paulette. Isn't it great? You bet, and you get to learn how to make one if you attend our Quilting in the Woods Retreat! Paulette is teaching a kaleidoscope quilt class at the retreat so we can all have one of our own. There will be more information to come about what fabric to buy, how much, and what all those 4, 6 and 8 repeat terms mean.

I love this picture. It is Paulette showing us all what is meant by repeating prints. Don't worry, we will get a lesson soon! All you need to know now is to mark May 1-3 on your calendar for the retreat. Better yet, use that cute little cabin magnet you have and make sure it is in perfect sight for your family to see it. Shantelle says they need to know when you will be gone quilting!

Here is Wendy and Crusan, our charity quilt ladies. Crusan sent a sign up around asking for help with piecing, quilting, and binding some of the instant blocks we learned and made last year. Thank you for those that signed up and are willing to donate your time and talents. Crusan also told us that she would willingly take any other charity quilts you would like to make to dialysis centers for their patients to use.

Wendy is our state guild representative and the Utah State Quilt Guild is asking its member to make 40" by 60" or larger quilts for Quilts4Cancer which benefits kids and teenagers with cancer in our state. They can be tied or quilted.

You can give the completed quilts to Wendy, she will turn them in for you, or I read in The Beeline Newsletter I receive from the state guild that you can turn them into a quilt shop in Tremonton called Quilters Harvest. They will turn them in for you AND they will give you a 20% discount off of a one time only purchase at their store. So, if you head north anytime soon, go check it out, tell us what a cute shop it is, turn in a quilt or two, and get a screaming good deal! The owner of that shop, Peggy Schultz would love to see you! In order for your quilts to go to Quilts4Cancer, they need to be finished by September, but why put it off?
