Beautiful Mountains

We had a few mountains from our 2009 Heber Valley Row Quilt show up at our March meeting's sew and tell. Here are some of them. There were also a few ladies that brought their mountains in February that I didn't get a picture of yet. We received the pattern for the Farm Row at our March meeting. April's Sew and tell will be full of farms hopefully! Remember to make a copy or two of your paper pieced patterns before you begin!

More ways to Bee Daring!

At our March guild meeting we also got to learn a little about wool and be inspired by all the fun, beautiful things that Ann McEwen has made and brought to show us. She made this jacket and then added an amazing garden on it with wool. It turned out so very fun! Thanks Ann for sharing your amazing talent with us and inspiring us to be more daring!

Ann brought so many completed projects for us to see, but she also brought some raw wool that she has in her stash. This wool here has been home dyed with Kool Aid to get the fun pastel colors that may be hard to find elsewhere.

Bee Daring

Bee Daring - Dare to use pre-cut fabrics!

Natalia did a great job at our March guild meeting inspiring us to be daring with all the fun pre-cut fabrics available.

She shared many beautiful quilts that she has made using all kinds of pre-cut fabrics. We got to see charm packs, jelly rolls, honey buns, layer cakes, and fat quarter bundles all put into action in various quilts. She also showed us some of the fun turnovers, jelly cakes, and charming jelly cakes that are available.

She had a few tips for us and one of them was that it is nice to shorten your stitch length a little when using pre-cut fabrics because many of the patterns that use jelly rolls, etc, have you cut the fabrics after they have been sewn together once.

This quilt was Natalia's first pre-cut fabric quilt project. She said from then on she has been hooked. Why cut fabric when the factory can do it for you?


These cute little bags are made from honey buns, 40 coordinating fabric strips cut into 1 1/2 inches by 44 inches. How darling! One honey bun will make 4 entire bags, inside and out, or 8 bags with another fabric used as lining.

This is a super fun quilt Natalia made using a jelly roll, 40 coordinating fabrics cut into 2 1/2 inch by 44 inch strips. She then added the large melon fabric and look how pretty it turned out!

Twin Size Quilts Tops Needed

Debbie, a member of our guild, is helping some kids that need to get in community service hours actually get them done. This quilt is one that she made so the kids that do need to get in hours can tie it and get some of their service hours completed. This quilt also happens to be going to the juvenile detention center where they are short in twin sized blankets for the beds.

What a great project. If you would like to make or help make a twin size quilt top to donate to the juvenile detention center and would love for other kids needing service hours to quilt it, contact Debbie. Heber Valley Quilters 2009 Design Challenge

Baskets of Friendship

The Design Challenge for this year is exciting as ever! We learned at our February meeting what the first part of the challenge is for the year. For those that are participating, you need to assemble a basket of friendship by making a 9" finished size (that is 9 1/2 " unfinished) basket block, 2 new quilting notions or tools, and a card that was attached to your handout from February. Wrap your basket of friendship with cellophane and a ribbon to be exchanged at our March meeting. We will receive the next step for the challenge then!

Queen Bee for February

February's Queen Bee is Heather

This is Heather's second year with the Heber Valley Quilt Guild and we are glad to have her with us. We learned quite a bit about Heather and it was nice getting to know another wonderful quilter from our guild.

Sorry about the expression I caught Heather, but the project was just too cute to not post!

February's Tip of the Month

Suzanne shared the tip and trick of the month with us at our February guild meeting. She had quite a few great ideas. One of her tips is to reduce your magazine storage space (she had boxes and boxes of quilting magazines) by tearing out the articles, patterns, etc that you are interested in and but them into binders. She categorizes her binders with the type of projects inside each one. This one here is an entire binder on CRAZY QUILTS. She said she has really reduced the space her magazines take up now with using binders and page protectors and just keeping the projects she is interested in.



She also told us that she LOVES Metler brand thread. It is a cotton thread that is silk wrapped and she has found it is really nice to work with when appliqueing. Thanks Suzanne for sharing some great ideas with us!

At our January guild meeting, Tricia gave us some great organization tips for our monthly Tips and Tricks. She suggested the rolling cart plastic bins. One drawer or bin can hold an entire project - fabric, pattern, thread, scraps, the whole shebang!. She also noted that if you need a project to take along somewhere, it is all there, ready to throw in a bag and take with you.
